Chloé becomes the first luxury fashion house to get B Corp certification

The rigorous B Corp certification verifies and underlines the efforts of Chloé 's creative director, Gabriela Hearst, and CEO Riccardo Bellini

To Emily Farra.

The debate on sustainability has become noisy and confusing lately. Recycled polyester, organic cotton, regenerative agriculture, vegetable leather, ethical work, vertical production... All this falls within the concept of "being sustainable", but the growing (and unbridled) greenwashing has triggered skepticism. If your leggings are recycled but they've been sewn up in a clandestine workshop, what kind of progress is that?

In order to know whether a company lives up to what it proclaims, it is necessary to investigate. But there is something that saves us that work: a B Corp. certification in the complex framework of standards and certifications, from OEKO-TEX to GOTS and Fair Trade, B Corp is the most rigorous and demanding, since it requires brands to answer 300 questions about their social and environmental impact. Their answers are qualified by a point system, and brands must obtain at least 80 to be awarded B Corp certification: of the 100,000 that have been evaluated, only 3,500 have passed the cut. With 151.4 points, Laurie touches the maximum score, while Allbirds reaches 89.4 points and another tomorrow exceeds 80.3.

Today it has been announced that Chloé will join the list, becoming the first luxury fashion house to achieve it. The news comes less than a year after Gabriela Hearst took over as creative director of the maison. Its impact was not kept to wait: its first collection for the firm included recycled wool knitting and cashmere garments, refurbished vintage handbags and scarves made from Chloé 's tissue remains in collaboration with Sheltersuit, a non-profit organization that offers shelter to homeless people. The total carbon footprint was 400% lower than the previous year, in line with CEO Riccardo Bellini's mission to become a "purpose-oriented" brand. In his recent 2022 spring parade, Hearst presented a new line of pieces that go beyond the notion of luxury, Chloé Craft, made entirely by hand in an effort to support artisans.

Chloé se convierte en la primera casa de moda de lujo en obtener la certificación B Corp

The B Corp seal verifies and underlines these efforts, but this does not mean that there is no work left to do: "more than a final goal, this certification marks a new stage in our transformation towards a purpose-driven model, reinventing our way of doing business," said the firm in a statement that also underlines the brand's activity beyond the product itself: Chloé now has a board of external experts to review and approve its plans and has set sustainability goals for its employees, from the first to the last department, to encourage the commitment of the entire company. Bellini adds: "B Corp certification provides us with a powerful framework to accelerate and guide this transformation. With it, we reinforce our commitment to continually challenge ourselves to using our brand and business as an engine for doing good." There's no doubt the bar's been fired.
