We tested the Lamborghini Urus: an overwhelming true super SUV with 650 HP of pure Italian race

The Lamborghini Urus has become the best-selling model of the brand from Sant'Agata Bolognese. This SUV with baroque shapes, a 5.11 meter long body and spectacular mechanics that delivers 650 CV is the main actor in this test that, we hope, will be as spectacular as its protagonist.

When Lamborghini announced the market launch on December 4, 2017 of its fourth model, the Lamborghini Urus, the brand took an important step forward by interfering for the first time in a segment where they had not had a presence since the very special and limited LM002, whose acronym They come from Lamborghini Military of which only 300 units were built. A Lamborghini SUV!

The Urus arrived to complement the two supercar models that had formed its most recent range, the Aventador with its V12 engine and the Huracán with its V10, which came to replace the Gallardo a few years ago. It made perfect sense that the complement to these two bulls was an SUV, the segment that was pulling the most in the market.

Lamborghini today is internationally recognized for its super sports cars, some of the most spectacular and with the most personality in the world. But we must not forget that the brand was born as a manufacturer of off-road vehicles, specifically tractors, which, by the way, are still marketed today although they do not belong to the Automobili Lamborghini company.

Ferruccio Lamborghini I think he would be proud of the car he is dealing with today. From the brand itself they refer to it as the first Super SUV, an "authentic Lamborghini in terms of design, performance, dynamic behavior and emotion, also usable on a day-to-day basis in a wide variety of environments."

As spectacular as supercars

When you see a Lamborghini Urus in person, you realize how special this car is. Its bodywork imposes, it has presence and a unique countenance. It is marked by straight lines and edges are everywhere.

On the front you can see how they have managed to transfer and adapt the characteristic design of the Huracán to the dimensions of an SUV. The optics are quite sharp, and are marked by the Y-shaped interior LED line that gives it personality.

The shape of the front hood, with a small indentation at the height of the logo that presides over the front, is almost identical to that of the Huracán, and that this one has the engine in a central position and not under the hood as it happens in the Urus.

The imposing grille, of gigantic dimensions and with a plot of hexagonal shapes, reaches very low and denotes that we are facing a sports SUV more than one that has many jacket pretensions.

The rest of its body is marked by straight and angular lines, by very wide front and rear wings and by a descending roof line that gives it a very natural and clean SUV Coupé look.

The spoiler located at the end of the roof gives way to the rear window, super sloped, which in turn sets the style of the tailgate. It presides over the word Lamborghini located in a highly visible position, right on the LED line that joins both rear light groups, making it possibly one of the most forceful taillights you have ever seen.

The set is completed by the darkened optics with LED lights, once again in the shape of a Y, the four exhaust outlets, arranged two on each side and an air diffuser that once again reminds us of supercars and indicates that we are not facing a any car.

The standard 22-inch wheels do not seem exaggerated, since the car is larger than we might think. That's why there are 23-inch ones.

When you approach him it doesn't look like you're approaching a 5.11 meter long car. Due to the compactness of its lines, the Lamborghini Urus seems considerably smaller than it really is. We'll see if the same thing happens when driving it.

Aircraft-inspired interior

You open the door of the Lamborghini Urus and you find an absolutely spectacular interior, overwhelming, with a clear inspiration in the world of aviation.

The Urus can accommodate five occupants (as an option it can also be ordered with only 4 seats and a more radical seating configuration) who will enjoy a wild experience.

The entire dashboard follows the same design guidelines as the exterior, with a predominance of hexagonal shapes, straight lines and edges. This is the case, for example, in the ventilation outlets, located in the upper part and in the case of the test unit, covered by carbon fiber moldings.

The combination of leather with the seams in fluorescent yellow (to match the details of the exterior, such as the lower part of the bumper that are part of this special Graphite Capsule version), the carbon and the alcantara that is also used in the bottom of the dashboard, make this car convey a sense of sportiness and luxury in equal parts.

The entire Lamborghini range will be electrified in 2024, but in the meantime we must continue to enjoy machines like this

In the center console there are two screens. The upper one is from where the audio, navigation, telephone and vehicle information systems are managed. The lower one mainly integrates the air conditioning controls and some other. Those who have ridden in an Audi RS Q8 will perceive certain similarities, although the Lamborghini has some graphics of all these menus that follows the hexagonal pattern.

Yes, other controls are more easily identified as Audi origin, such as the buttons on the three-spoke multifunction steering wheel or the levers on the sides of the steering column for the intermittent and windscreen wiper controls.

Despite what appears due to its peculiar exterior design, the interior of the Lamborghini Urus conveys a feeling of spaciousness both in the front and rear seats, something logical thanks to the three meters of wheelbase.

For its part, the trunk has 616 liters of capacity.

takeoff procedure

The start-up of a Lamborghini Urus has nothing to do with that of most earthly cars. It starts with a start-up procedure that makes you think you're starting the turbines of a fighter plane instead of starting a "mere" car.

In the center of the central console there are three controls called Tamburo that inevitably remind us of those that airplane pilots have before them. In the central one, we find a red cover protecting the start button. You have to lift it to access the start button. When pressed, the beast wakes up with a rather considerable bellow.

From that control you can also select the different positions of the change, between P, D, N, R or M in case you want to take the change in manual position and play with the gear shift paddles located behind the steering wheel. These by the way have a very large size and an excellent touch.

5,021 units of the Urus have been sold in 2021 compared to 2,586 Huracán

The engine of this beast is consistent with the approach of the car. It is the 4.0 V8 twin-turbo that we know from other models of the Volkswagen Group, such as the Audi RS Q8. In the Urus it has been increased to 650 CV at 6,000 RPM, being able to stretch up to 6,800 RPM.

We hit the road and during the first bars, always in the STRADA driving mode, which is the default mode, we can see how the engine is super full throughout the rev band. You don't have to work too hard to get into the right gear out of the eight available when you've got 850Nm of torque ready to push as long as you keep the speed between 2,250 and 4,500 RPM.

The driver's seat, which in this case was the optional one with 18 adjustments, allows for a driving position extremely close to the ground, much more than is usual in an SUV of its size and approach.

This, together with a very direct set-up of the chassis and suspension, creates a unique connection with the whole, which makes the sensation of absolute control at all times. And of course, having 650 hp in your hands translates into a desire to have fun.

When you stand in front of a Lamborghini Urus you feel something similar to what those who run in front of the bulls in Pamplona in San Fermín must feel.

Surprisingly, that connection to the whole doesn't mean uncomfortable ride comfort. Moving on wide and well-surfaced roads, the Urus allows you to drive comfortably at a high pace. It is not stiffer than an Audi RS Q8.

Changing the character of the beast with the ANIMA

To the left of the set of controls that allows you to start the mechanics, we find the ANIMA. This is what the mode selector control is called, which allows you to select between STRADA, SPORT and CORSA as well as the NEVE (snow) mode and the optional ones for off-road use: TERRA (off-road) and SABBIA (sand).

Switching to SPORT mode the character of the car wins whole. The sound of the 4.0 V8 becomes noticeably throatier and more noticeable, the response to throttle movements is more instantaneous, the steering more direct and in general, everything starts to happen faster.

Curves arrive and there the Urus brings out its best face. It is incredibly agile at the entrance of the curves, it does not cost anything to put it in and when you start to see the exit, it is enough to give gas so that the four-wheel drive system is responsible for distributing the torque between both axles and that the car shoots out forward like a shot. A real shot.

In the most pronounced turns, the way it has to avoid body movements stands out. Spin flat. It is the first time that a Lamborghini uses active stabilizer bars, a solution that until now had not been necessary because they only made cars so low and hard that they did not roll in the corners.

Lamborghini plans to unveil 4 new models in the next 12 months and one of them could be an Urus EVO that could be a hybrid

Another element that is perceived as key is the direction in both axes. This solution is becoming more common in cars of a certain size to help the dynamics, it makes the wheels of the rear axle turn up to 3 degrees in both directions to give it more stability at high speed or, on the contrary, provide it with agility at more moderate speed. and in slow curves.

This helps that even in the most pronounced curves, those of 180 degrees that force the steering wheel to turn completely to register and go towards the inner vertex, the Urus shows impressive forms. Not surprisingly, the rear axle steering system simulates that the wheelbase is shortened by 60 millimeters, which is a lot.

Unlimited benefits

We continue to pick up the pace as we follow the caravan, made up of two other Urus and three Huracán EVOs (you can already guess one of the upcoming tests). The car runs a lot no, a lot. Its figures say it and that's how it feels from the driver's seat. It does 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and reaches 200 km/h in 12.8 seconds, but if you decide to continue with your foot to the floor you will reach the maximum speed of 305 km/h sooner than you imagine.

Those benefits in a car of its size, no matter how low it goes, and with a weight of 2.2 tons, make the sensations absolutely bestial. There are hardly any uncomfortable inertias, of those that reduce confidence when you go on the attack.

Torsen center diff and torque vectoring system work magic to get this car going the way it goes

It is noted that this car incorporates the most advanced and expensive technology of the Volkswagen Group in terms of dynamic behavior, hence the carbon ceramic brakes are part of the standard equipment. We are talking about 440-millimeter discs at the front and 370 at the rear, capable of stopping you in just a few meters and staying out of fatigue even when subjected to intense use, as was the case.

And so, with a smile on our face like few sports SUVs are capable of drawing, we come to the end of the route with the Lamborghini Urus, a car that costs 262,319 euros, which has allowed Lamborghini to double its business figures, becoming the star of its range of models, and ultimately a car that, beyond giving profitability and viability to the Italian brand for the future, also perfectly represents the values that you expect to find in 'Lambo'. Even if it's an SUV.
