The Nativity Scene at the Madrid History MuseumFaithful to its Christmas date, the 18th-century Neapolitan nativity scene that houses the Madrid History Museum will once again be on display to the public from December 5 to January 31. Composed of more than 50 articulated figures, it is one of the most valuable sculptural sets in his collection. A valuable baroque sculptural ensemble where human and animal figures are shown, as well as numerous accessories, where the Nativity is evoked with the naturalistic description of the uses and customs of the Neapolitan people in the 18th century. It evokes the Nativity of Jesus in a unreal setting, in which the traditional portal has been replaced by a classical temple in ruins surrounded by stalls and cabins, where popular Italian figures, dressed in eighteenth-century fashion, mingle with the oriental world of the Magi and their retinue. The figures, highly realistic and expressive, are articulated, which allows movement to be represented, and reproduce different social types: peasants, shepherds, bourgeois, nobles, etc. The rich clothing of silk, satin, velvet or tiny jewels stand out in some characters.
