Through a letter signed by the governor himself, he explained that in addition to commuting his sentence, Aguilera-Mederos will be eligible to continue his process on parole, so he could be released from prison on December 30, 2026. “The power of Clemency is reserved only for the most unique and deserving cases," Polis added in the letter addressed to the 26-year-old. “My decision today is based solely on the circumstances of his case, I believe he deserves leniency for several reasons. He was sentenced to 110 years in prison, effectively more than a life sentence, for a tragic but unintentional act. While he is not without fault, his sentence is disproportionate compared to many other inmates in our criminal justice system who have committed intentional, premeditated, or violent crimes.”

In her stories, Kim thanked the state governor for changing the young trucker's sentence. “Thank you @govofco for taking action to reduce Mr. Aguilera-Mederos sentence! While his new sentence is 10 years, he will now have the opportunity to be reunited with his wife and children in five years' time."
