IKEA's FRAKTA bag gets a makeover

There is something more iconic at IKEA than the BILLY bookcase or the classic MALM chest of drawers, the FRAKTA bag, better known as the blue bag. The piece is so well known around the world that luxury brand Balenciaga took it on in 2016 and Zara followed in its footsteps by doing the same thing a year later. Now it is the Swedish brand itself that has given this iconic product a facelift in collaboration with designer Zandra Rhodes. IKEA has launched a collection with the so-called 'princess of punk' and among the most sought-after objects is the famous bag.

The new model is no longer blue, but a vibrant 'fuchsia' pink, and its silhouette is more rounded than the original model. In addition, it is surrounded by a string of ruffles, which give the piece an even more extravagant touch.

The new bag is part of the KARISMATISK collection, which will be available in selected stores and online from this September. Although it is a novelty for buyers and fans of the Swedish brand, IKEA had already shown this version of the bag in the fall of last year.

In an interview with The Guardian, Rhodes says the idea came about in lockdown when she painted the BILLY bookcase she has in her house a Frida Khalo-esque “iridescent” blue. The result is a collection of 26 products, including vases, cushions or blankets with the vibrant prints that characterize the designer's work. "I can't wait to see people walking around with one of the pink bags," she told the British newspaper.

It is not the first time that IKEA has played with a change of image in its flagship product. In 2019, the brand released a printed version in collaboration with Darcel Disappoints and Colette. The result was a nice print that delighted buyers.

On that occasion, the tuned bag coexisted with the classic blue FRAKTA, the same thing that will happen now with the pink version of Rhodes.
